Built within the burned-out shell of what was once the world’s largest and most technically advanced flour mill, the Mill City Museum is part of the development and restoration of historic structures along the Mississippi River in downtown Minneapolis. With a respect for the old and a recognition of the new, architects and contractors came together to preserve an important part of this city’s history.
Wood and concrete dominate the museum’s lobby, with heavy-timber columns and beams embracing a ceiling of intricately carved wheat berry images. The lobby floor consists of end-grain wood, the same kind of wood once used on nearby streets.
